Semen cost per pregnancy calculator

A $30 straw is not a $30 calf. Enter what you spend per cow and your conception rate to see what each AI pregnancy really costs, and how that compares with a natural service bull.

$127AI cost per pregnancy with the example values below.Leer en español

Cost per AI pregnancy = (semen + technician + synchronization + other cost per cow) ÷ conception rate. For example, $30 semen, $15 for the technician and $25 for synchronization is $70 per cow; at 55% conception each pregnancy costs about $127. Conception rate moves the answer more than the price of the straw.

How do I calculate the cost per pregnancy for AI?

Add up everything you spend per cow inseminated (semen, technician or breeding fee, synchronization drugs and any other per-head cost) and divide by the conception rate. At $70 per cow and 55% conception, each AI pregnancy costs about $127.

Why does conception rate matter more than the price of a straw?

Every cow you pay to breed that does not settle still costs money. Raising conception from 45% to 60% cuts the cost per pregnancy by a quarter, which usually saves more than shopping for cheaper semen. Body condition, heat detection, semen handling and timing all move conception rate.

What conception rate should I expect from timed AI?

Timed AI programs in beef cows commonly settle around 50 to 60% of the cows in one service, and well-managed herds can do better. Use your own records if you have them: the calculator is only as good as the rate you enter.

How do I compare AI with a natural service bull?

Spread the bull’s purchase price minus his salvage value over the years you use him, add his yearly feed, vet and other costs, then divide by the cows he covers and by the share that get pregnant. The calculator does this and shows the cost per pregnancy side by side.

Does the cheapest option per pregnancy win?

Not always. AI gives access to proven sires, a tighter calving season and more calves from the first cycle, which can add weaning weight and value. The cost per pregnancy is one input to the decision, not the whole answer.
