Our Story
Lazy Dog Cattle Co. is owned and run by Zach and Laura Beagle in Scurry, Texas. What began as a small family herd has become a multi-generation effort: the kids grew up on the ranch, started families of their own, and still come home to work cattle, with grandkids helping out and the youngest watching from playpens beside the chutes.
The program runs both registered and commercial cattle, centred on Santa Gertrudis and Hereford genetics. A few registered Santa Gertrudis heifers go on to the show ring each year, bulls are sold as registered herd sires or join the beef program, and Santa Gertrudis x Hereford cattle can be registered as Star 5 for showing, replacements or the food chain.
The family's guiding rule is quality over quantity. Rather than chasing numbers, Lazy Dog raises a select group of sound, versatile cattle each year, from registered show animals and replacement stock to premium farm-to-table beef, built on hard work, tradition and doing things the right way.
Our Journey
Chevy hits the show circuit
Won through the calf scramble program, Chevy places at Houston, the Junior Santa Gertrudis show, Heart of Texas, San Antonio and the State Fair of Texas, and is Reserve Grand Champion at the county show.
Kevin, MR WF 2033
One of the high-selling bulls at the 2023 Strait-Hefte Tried & True Production Sale, Kevin now leads the Lazy Dog bull battery.
JR joins the program
The junior herd bull, by Hefte Ranch F14 Tomcat, is purchased to work the commercial Herefords and the Star 5 program.
Tried & True consignments
Lazy Dog consigns open heifer LZDR Ms Gen M25 and partnership bull Lazy Dog Hefte M21 to the Strait-Hefte Tried & True Sale in Streetman, Texas.
South Texas Heritage Sale
LZDR Ms. Patsy M26, a Kevin daughter out of Dolly, sells as Lot 29 in Gonzales to a large South Texas Santa Gertrudis seedstock operation.
