The Homolka family has worked this ground between Holyrood, Wilson and Claflin since the early 1900s. Jim's family quarried the limestone and built the three-story home and the iconic barn. Two fires later scorched that limestone red, and that's where the name comes from.
Josh and Jessica started with Wagyu near Ottawa, Kansas. In 2016, during a recruiting trip as a college football coach, Josh bought five F1 Wagyu cows. Later that year, walking the field at Chicago's White Sox stadium, he bought five Braunvieh cows over the phone, and they produced the ranch's first embryo-transfer calves.
Partnering with Gypsum Valley Wagyu near Salina, the ranch began producing F2 freezer beef. Our ribeyes earned recognition at the Triple Crown Steak Challenge, and partnerships with restaurants like Fly Boys in Sylvan Grove and Verdant in Hays introduced Kansas diners to Wagyu.
Today Jim & Katie and Josh & Jessica run Scorched Stone Cattle Company as a seedstock operation focused on polled and fullblood Wagyu, with cattle that deliver pounds that pay and carcasses that command a premium.

The family quarries the limestone and builds the three-story home and barn that still stand on the farm.
Five F1 Wagyu cows, then five Braunvieh cows that produce the ranch's first ET calves. Josh moves home to help run and diversify the farm.

"The polled genetics are the real deal. Our G4 calves came easy, no dehorning, and the marbling numbers held up. Josh knows his pedigrees."
"Bought IVF embryos and the whole process was smooth: clear paperwork, quick shipping from the ET center, and honest follow-up after transfer."
"We added Scorched Stone F1 females to our herd. Good dispositions, and the calves graded better than anything we'd raised before."
