Our Story

In 1908 J.D. Hudgins formed a partnership with his children to raise commercial cattle and farm in Hungerford, Texas. Searching for cattle that would thrive in the heat and parasites of the Gulf Coast, J.D. and his son Walter began putting together all of the humped Indian cattle they could find in 1915.

In 1933 the family brought home Manso, the bull whose name every J.D. Hudgins animal still carries. His heavy-muscled calves helped shape the American Brahman, the first breed developed in the United States, and the family has shown Brahmans at Houston since 1932.

Today the fifth, sixth and seventh generations manage the business across the Cloverleaf, Little h, Koonce, Forgason, Locke and Goudeau divisions. Visitors are always welcome at the ranch, and every calf still carries the Half Circle L on its right hip.
