From artificial insemination to conventional flushes and sexed IVF, every mating aims for cattle that hold up in the pasture and are feed efficient, with consistent phenotypes.

In 1961 CL Lehman of Corpus Christi bought a 2,600-acre ranch outside Cotulla in La Salle County and started a herd of V8 Brahman "Sugarland Co" cattle bought from Sloan Williams. His daughter, Michael Lehman Budd, kept raising registered Brahmans into the early 2000s.
In the mid-1990s Michael and Mark brought Beefmasters to the ranch, under Beefmaster Breeders United number 411, one of the first issued. Since then Mark and Chris Cooley, CL's grandsons, have rebuilt both the Brahman and Beefmaster herds around modern genetics, using AI, flushes and sexed IVF.
Today a 175-head herd runs on improved buffel grass with modern grazing and brush control, backed by two pivots fed from a 2,200-foot well CL drilled in 1971. The Nueces River and Harris Lake form the ranch's two-mile northern border, where riparian areas are fenced off for wildlife, and the family's motto still holds: Traditional Values, Modern Genetics and Superior Cattle.
