Steve and Mary Erichsen moved to Weatherford, Texas in 2012 to get more involved in the cutting horse world, buying a small ranch outside town sight unseen. It turned out to be a perfect fit, and the horses, dogs, cats and donkeys have multiplied ever since.
After a career in high tech, Steve retired in 2015 and wanted to do something unique with cattle rather than simply raise beef. The more breeds he studied, the more he kept coming back to Wagyu, Japan's long-protected national treasure.
Today the Black Dog Ranch and Cattle Company focuses on the breeding end of the industry: using top Wagyu genetics from around the world to raise Fullblood seedstock for ranchers building their own herds. The herd is kept deliberately small so every mating gets close attention, and the ranch takes pride in helping new breeders get started.
