Our Story

Herd numbers 48 and 49 make Briggs Ranches one of the oldest established Santa Gertrudis operations in the country. R.W. Briggs Sr. purchased his first Santa Gertrudis bulls in 1942 from King Ranch, and in 1943 bought the first herd of 150 females from Dr. J.K. Northway. Through an upgrading program that began in 1946 with 400 Hereford cows, Briggs Ranches reached purebred status in 1955.

Today the ranch maintains 500-600 head of purebred Santa Gertrudis cows and 150 purebred Brangus females, plus 1,000 to 1,500 commercial females in a good year. Briggs joined the IBBA in 2016, and the Super American cross (Santa Gertrudis x Brangus) has seen strong demand across the Southeast.

Headquarters is the Traylor Division in Bloomington, Texas, with the San Roque Division in Catarina and the San Carlos Division in Rio Grande City. Briggs has hosted the Tri-Star Sale since 1994 and introduced the Bull and Commercial Heifer Sale in 2004.
